I own a '98 528i and I still do not trust the auto re-circ. When I get to drive the car (which is not very often) I have to pass along a couple of dairy farms to get to the main part of town and trust me on this, the smell does get through to the cabin with the auto on. So I know for sure it does not filter out the smell. I have not tried it on with a sand storm or other types of particulates in the air but I think of it as something that is there to show off to your friends. My recommendation, use the manual recirculation because it works excellent. I hope my new 323i's system works as well.
