that after spending the $3100 to match original equipment level of 328, you then are unable to add sport package. (which I hear will change for MY'00) I did different math: $600 for alloy wheels, $260 for fog lamps and heated mirrors, $300 for on-board computer, $475 for cruise control. The gap is not as small.
It really depends on how much the performance aspect means to you. You can't get the premium package with sport on 323. So if you plan on getting sport package, and want a front armrest and trip computer, you'll have to pay extra for those. Also, the 323 doesn't offer rear passenger reading lights, and an interior trunk release. (Not a concern for most.) If you are going for luxury, then 323. If you are going for performance and luxury then 328. I think if you are going for performance alone--you'd be happy with either, but would prefer the 328.
Drive the two cars back to back. If the 328 feels like $5K more in performance--then go for it.
