I saw the prior thread regarding pre-ordered BMW's arriving with what looks likes 2-9 miles for the low range. 2 seems just right, with 3-4 acceptable. Anything more seems excessive.
I'm pretty close to ordering a custom ordered BMW myself and this got me thinking/worried. Basically, if I'm going to suffer through the wait of ordering a car, I want to make darn sure I get a brand spanking new car with only the minimum miles needed to deliver it with no test drives / joy rides on it.
My question is, why should a pre-ordered car arrive with anything more than 2 mile on it? Just looking at it from a logistics point of view, I calculated that 2 miles based on:
-you figure there's a guy who drives it off the assembly line to some temporary holding lot (0.1 - 0.3 miles)
-then some other guy drives it off the holding lot to the shipping lot where they get loaded on trucks (0.1 to 0.5 miles)
-then some other guy drives it onto the carrier trucks (0.1 miles)
-then some guy drives if off the carrier truck to the shipyard cargo parking lot (0.1 to 0.3 miles)
-then some other guy drives it off the cargo parking lot into the ship (0.1 to 0.3 miles)
-then some other guy drives it off the ship to the cargo parking lot of the destination port (0.1 to 0.3 miles)
-then some other guy drives it off the cargo parking lot onto a carrier truck (0.1 miles)
-then the dealer/carrier driver drives it off the carrier truck onto the dealer's lot (0.1 to 0.2 miles)
the range I arrive at is 0.8 to 2.1 miles. even assuming a bit larger range to deal with ports with really large cargo lots and doubling that figure, i can't think of anything else to account for legitimate delivery miles.
jon/rick - what kind of milage are you seeing on cars coming into your dealerships ordered by customers?
