How long it stays in first gear will depend on how you accelerate not on elapsed time. I have an automatic too and the shift point for first gear is approx. 5-7 mph, second gear is about 15 mph.
If you accelerate very slowly it will stay in first gear for a longer period of time. On a typical start from zero you should reach 5-7 mph within 1 or 2 seconds and the transmission should shift into second gear.
