In Reply to: Steering/braking: a proposal (long) posted by Jim Robertson on April 17, 1999 at 23:18:46:

: We have people here insisting they have NO problems with steering/braking, others that they have a "warped rotors" sensation braking from 75->65 mph, others saying that their car floats over the road, others noting a quick twitch of the wheel when the brakes are tapped firmly, even at low speed. Some have gotten their dealers to acknowledge that a problem exists to the extent that the dealers have replaced bushings, brake rotors, and perhaps other components as well.

: Thus far, it's not clear whether we're dealing with variations in cars or variations in driver perception. I make the following proposal:

: In areas where there are enough E46 owners, let's get together in small groups on a Saturday morning and take a scenic drive, swapping cars and drivers. We'd need owners who are certain they have problems and owners who are certain their cars are trouble-free. In my area (SF Bay area), I could envision a group in SF, a group in the Peninsula, one in the East Bay, one in the South Bay, and one in the North Bay. We'd drive specific routes and compare the feel of each others' cars. When done, we'd at least be on the same page regarding whether or not there is a sporadic or a systematic problem.

: I'd be happy to coordinate the North Bay group (Marin, Napa, Sonoma counties).

: What do you all think?

: By the way, I accelerated to 80 and braked to 60 repetively on 101 this morning on the way to my bicycle ride in the Alexander Valley, and I couldn't feel ANYTHING wrong (328 sport/premium, manual transmission, and I don't know which tires I have). I DO feel a wheel twitch when I tap the brake pedal firmly, but this occurs even at low speed.
