You should search the archives. There are numerous posts that answer all of your questions. I will try to summerize what I remember. Most people here agree that changing the stock radio is not a good idea because it will ruin the clean look of your dash and you will not be able to use the control buttons on the steering wheel. Besides, the radio head unit is not the cause of the bad sound quality, it is the amp and the speakers that are the culprits. There are people who have posted here about replacing the amp or the amp and speakers in their cars while keeping the head unit and they had quite an improvement. There are even posts that have the amp/speaker wire color codes listed. You may also want to check out the a/d/s/ Web site at http://www.adst.com/e36/. They have 3 different amp/speaker upgrades for the E36 which may give you an idea of what your options are. They have also been working on similar upgrades for the E46, which may be done by now. You should contant them to find out.

Again, you should do a search in the archives...but to put it simply keep the head unit upgrade the amp or the amp and speakers.
