: How do people who driven steptronic like it?? Is it like the audi tiptronic? Are the 0-60 and 1/4 mile times faster?? Any ideas??

: thanks

I drove a 540i with steptronic and liked it. It seemed quite smooth and is manual to a point. The trans will shift at redline automatically. The trans will downshift automatically if you floor it. It will not downshift if the revs are too high, but it also forgets that you wanted to downshift, so you have to downshift manually again when the revs allow. If you lug the engine in 5th, it will automatically downshift. When you come to a stop, the trans defaults to 3rd gear. You have to shift twice to put it in 1st. I think the manual will always be faster than the automatic but the smoothness is nice. The 540i is rated at 0-60 5.8 with 6-speed (2.82 axle); auto-non-sport trans 6.2 (2.82 axle); and steptronic 6.1 (3.15 axle). Car mags have done 5.5 with 6-speed and about with 6.1 with auto. I haven't seen any tests yet of the steptronic except in the 740i.
Overall, you can't go wrong either way. Personally, I prefer manual, but I came close to buying a 99 540iA with steptronic. I'm still waiting to see how it will perform with a smaller engine. The 4.4L V8 has so much torque that the steptronic seems great. It might be sluggish off the line in the 2.8L.
