No, unfortunately I did not test the oil from the initial change. I changed the initial oil after 2,000 miles and I can tell you it looked a lot worse then the oil I took out at 28,000 miles (with 11k miles on it)

I think it's good to change the initial oil after a few thousand miles, and after that, just stick with what the manufacturer recommends (in this case, 15k miles).

: Don't know how many people read the bimmer mag article on oil in the july(?) issue (issue with 323i/328i comparison, e46 coupe on cover). Jack's findings are consistent with the article. However, what about the wear metals from engine break-in? Granted, modern engines are clean when assembled, but wear metals may be smaller than can be filtered out.

: If nothing else, maybe I'll get my oil tested.
: 850 miles on the clock.
