Ok, I had some free time tonight so I went to a huge deserted parking lot and decided to get a good feel for how my 323i sport handled "at the limit". It was great fun doing imaginary slaloms etc... One thing that I noticed that might be worth mentioning is that the e46 is kind of tricky in the emergency lane change maneuver. I simulated deer (or your favorite road critter) avoidance at about 60-70mph a few times and noticed that if you are not very quick with the countersteering it is very easy to bring the rear around. With the steering being slightly slow (I forget what the number of turns lock-to-lock it is) if you don't react very fast and very positively you will probably spin. This really surprised me at first (our 2.8 Z3 is much more forgiving in that respect) but it is not by any means unrecoverable. I just thought I should warn you guys not to slack if you face such a situation in the "real world".
