: I'm installing an oil temperature guage this weekend. Anytime I work on electrical components I always unhook the battery leads. On older bimmers I have to reset the radio codes for the anti-theft if the current from the battery is cut off. My new E46 does not mention about the codes nor does it comes with the headunit manual. Can someone confirm whether the new ones need code resetting afterwards?

I am not sure about the stereo code, but I have heard that this will clear the programming for certain options like: follow me home lighting, DRLs etc, also, it may affect programming for the alarm. I would check with a dealer service department prior to doing it, as it may save you a costly service trip to the shop. Let me know what you find out, as I will be shipping mine home from Italy in the spring, and they usually disconnect the battery on the ship. Thanks...
