Warranty Repair Question (long) (archive)

About a week ago, I took my '99 323I to the dealership to repair the rear passenger door (very difficult to close since purchase). They "adjusted the door marker”, but this didn't fix the problem. I have since called them to schedule another visit and was told that because of the distance (I'm 3 hours round-trip to dealership) I could find a reputable local body shop to fix the problem(again adjust the door marker). I can then send copy of invoice to dealership and BMW would reimburse me. This fix would be considered as a warranty item. Question - Do I do this and expose myself to: #1 and least important, non-reimbursement ($40 buck maximum) and #2 possible warranty void issues by having someone else work on car, even though I was given option by BMW service advisor? Would you do this even if if you had it in writing? Your suggestions?
