This topic has been discussed a lot but I hope I can share some useful info with you. In my opinion (read - for my driving style) the sport package is essential. It does make a very significant difference in how precisely the car drives and makes it handle much better (better grip, less body roll, no wallowing). The ride difference between the two is noticeable but I don't think many people would find the sports package too harsh. It is definately softer than the e36 sport package and the non-sport package e46 is very soft (much softer than a stock e36). One thing that I have noticed about my car is that while you will feel most of the bumps and irregularities of the road, the "jolt" that is transmitted to the cabin is softened. Basically the jolt is significant but it is not sudden as it would be on most cars with stiff suspension. So although you will feel the bumps you will not really find it harsh or sudden. Also, I have not heard anyone regret their choice of the sport package, while I have seen at least 4-5 people who regret not getting it. Ideally you should try to test drive both back to back on representative roads but if that is impossible and you are really debating the question, I would say go ahead and order it. I really doubt that you will regret it.

Hope I could help you.

Good luck with your car, either way I am sure you will love it. It is an excellent car.

Rudy
