You're absolutely right about the VR6...I traded a '97 Jetta GLX for my '99 323 and I still think I like the VW engine better. It would haul ass and made great sounds doing it. The inline in my 323 is nice, and probably more appropiate for the car, but it hasn't got near as much soul. As far as the handling in the Jetta, it would benefit greatly from a stiffer suspension.

: I previously owned a GTI VR6 (series3) and I must say I love my new 323 and I have been a bimmer man since birth (my father got his first bimmer in 1973) but I miss her. She was a pure car, BMW is a step up but VW's (only VR6) are pure FUN. I had 60k on it when I traded her and she was smooth, the only things you'll notice are that a few pices are cheap and snap on's and they tend to crack or fall off, had a few problems with the wear of the leather also....but if your looking for a bang for your buck...go for it. By the way the suspension on the Golf GTI VR6 & the Jetta VR6 are different (i believe) Golf is tighter and is a better model.....goes to show you why we don't get every model of every car like europeans get cause we buy more Jetta's they buy more Golf's so I don't think they respect the general american car buyer as much.

: anyway enjoy the new 328 you are going to LOVE it!

: ibBERTO and my thoughts.

:
: : I went to the BMW dealer yesterday in order to pick up the registration for my dad's new (pre-owned) 740iL, and I saw a silver / black 328i (4-door sedan) there on the lot, with every option I wanted (Premium package, Sport Package,
: : Harman / Kardon Stereo, Nakamichi CD player, Xenon lights, Heated Seats every option available but the auto transmission, the GPS Navigation System, and the fold-down rear seats). I went in and started kicking around the idea of going for the 328i, which was attractive to me
: : because of the additional power, especially in light of the fact that no additional power would be available through chips and mods, at least according to Car & Driver last month! So, I wound up canceling my order for the 323Ci coupe and going for 328i sedan - the car will be ready on Friday!! I'm excited, because I've been waiting since July and now finally it's here!

: : In other car news, my SO is going shopping for a new car this weekend. She likes the new Jetta Series IV GLS VR6. It has an AMAZING amount of features for the money - almost everything my mom's 528i has, but the Jetta is only $23k! However, upon driving it, I was disappointed with
: : the handling. it was soft and sloppy, and didn't feel German at all. It wasn't even close to my friend's old Series III Golf VR6 in terms of handling - I suspect that they "Americanized" the suspension for this market, where everyone loves a soft, cushy ride instead of good
: : handling. Ahh well, it's a nice car anyway. The only concern now is reliability - maybe you guys can ping me offlist and tell me any experiences you or your friends have with VW (or even Audi) reliability? TIA!
