: I went to my local dealer today during lunch. I took a CD with me that had both great high and powerful lows. They had 2 323i's on the lot, one with the factory stereo, the other with the HK upgrade.
: Here is my summary:
: You can tell a difference between the two systems. Though the margin between them is minimal. I think this is because the stock system is so good. The HK upgrade sounds great, compared to a crappy stock system it probably sounds absolutely wonderful, but compared to the stock E46 system it does not flurish as much. Before I did today's comparison I was set on including the HK upgrade in my order. Though today, I'm thinking a little differently. If the HK upgrade was only $200-300 then it be well worth it. But at $675, I strongly contest, it is not worth it.
: Now, someone early mentioned replacing the amp in the HK upgrade. If this works, that would be great, but why put another $300-400 in a system that already cost you almost $700.
: All other opinions regarding the replacement amp are appreciated. Also, has anyone upgraded their stock system and if so with what and what was the result.

this has to be one of the most subjective topics discussed here. responses vary all over the place. some say that HK is great, some say the stock system is horrible. Others say HK sucks and the stock system isn't that bad. Still there are others that say they both suck.
Point is that there will never be any agreement on this and the best thing to do is use your own judgement. Get what YOU like.
