Here in CT we take rust prevention quite seriously. I had the opportunity to discuss BMWs factory rust protection with a factory rep who was at my dealer. They are quite proud of their engineering in this area. With a BMW 98 E36 on a lift the factory rep pointed out that BMWs underbody treatment is far superior to most automobiles. All components are either painted properly (powder coat included), or are stainless steel, or are coated with their polymer undercoating (which is the same color as the body paint). All body panels have a special wax-like treatment sprayed on unexposed side (inside doors etc.). He also went on to say that additional undercoating may actually cause more damage than good. It may have air pockets that retain moisture causing premature rusting. Also, the dealer's mechanics basically backed up his statements and said BMWs hold up quite well to many years of winter exposure.
: Or any other roads in Europe for that matter...
: Although they (new Bimmers)come with some undercoating from the factory already, if I lived in a place such as N.Y. I would investigate EXTRA protection for my new BMW... Again, this is just my $.02... I live in Santa Barbara, CA. It doesn't even rain here! ;-)
