If you drive a lot of miles for work, etc. your best bet is a paid for used car that you maintain well and drive well into the 100k's. I just would have dropped the full coverage insurance when the car's value dipped below $9k or $10k. You'll probably come out ahead, though, having had the accident as you'll at least get something and you probably wouldn't have saved that much yet on insurance premiums.

We currently have three cars, all paid for (we don't finance cars). They range from '81 to '92 models and between 105k and 208k miles. It's been years since we had full coverage on any of them. We currently pay only $55/month total to insure all three! It sure will be a shock when our new 323i arrives in November and we have to insure that thing!

You probably have some negotiating room with your insurance company. Don't give up easily. They won't pay you what you'd like to have but you can probably get some more out of them due to the recent upgrades/repairs. Just collect the receipts, work orders, etc. to show them what you did.
