Sound quality is best entailed by clear imaging
(sound is coming from a single clear source in the
center of the cabin -hard to accomplish in a car)
and a wide soundstage (the sound is at ear level
and seems to envelope the listener).
These goals are hard to achieve in a car, which
is in fact a terrible listening environment. To
get great SQ, lots of trial and error (my kind of
engineering :P) would be required...much harder
than, say, a home, where you simply buy the best
speakers you can afford and set them down - easy!

personally, in a car, my standards for SQ are
lowered by leaps and bounds compared to what i expect
out of a home system - i don't feel like spending
the $ and time needed, instead, i want to listen
to music, simply.

awhile ago, someone said great music is still great
music however well it is reproduced, and vice versa.

to get to the point, hk is probably not worth
600 dollars. for 600 you can buy a new amp/
crossovers for your stock speakers, and it will
sound much clearer with more bass definition, which
is lacking in either system. i'll forget about
a subjective review of the systems, they're such
a matter of personal opinion, but i did get the
stock sytem intending to upgrade. so far, i have
been enjoying the car too much to care about the
stereo, and it is more than adequate. with the
windows down at 65, i start to notice the lack in
power (where's the bass? all treble, hehe) but
with the windows closed, there isn't that much
to complain about.

to those considering the HK...i would take that $600
and buy a decent four channel amp and crossovers.
remember the only way to audition is with the cd
player...the fm quality is, indeed, poor.

my ideal setup, once i get over the thrill of the
driving part (maybe never):

mb quart 6.5 2 way component set, disconnect
midrange spkr wire but leave spkr in to avoid rattles

remove rear midbass, cut wires to tweets.

two 12" solobarics in a sealed box in trunk

four channel PPI amp for fronts (biamped)

big honking PPI amp for subs

phoenix gold 1/3rd octave EQ

stock head unit for now, until a suitable
trim piece is on the market and harness that
keeps steering wheel controls <-- love 'em!

well sorry for rambling but i have a great love
for music and the way it is reproduced.

sound system - 1260 miles on the exhaust,
sounding better every day

: Some people like sound system with hard, deep bass, systems were you could hear each Bass, Treble, and Mid Range note clearly and enjoyable. Iím one of these people that like good quality sound system at high volumes at least 300 watts minimum.

: Others are just fine with what the car comes with I imagine close to 100 watts all speaker put together. The problem with this stock systems ( the one I got on my 323Ci w/CD changer) is that to my trained ear I can tell the difference in sound quality, and its bad, the way I describe it is it sounds like all bass treble and mid range is all coming out of the same place threw a cone or something like that. I like in long island and the FM stations are terrible on the stock sound system

: Now the HK system ( the one my brother got in his 323I) it is much better than the stock system, but still not even close to having a custom sound system.

: Put simple I often listen to both sound system stock in my car and HK in my brotherís car, and now I appreciate the HK system much more. The reason I got stock sound system was because I did not like the sound of the HK system. And thought I will add amps, eq and crossover and keep the head unit to keep the controls on the steering wheel, but BUT BUT, now I kick my self because the stock sound system seems to have bad signal quality coming out from the head unit. I concluded this from listening to the FM radio.

: Well I told my dealer how I felt, he says that since the car is a new model that there really is not after market product for the 323Ci,,,, he made some calls and found out that in LA is were car products come out firstÖ well this week heís getting two audio catalog magazines for the E46 and one of them is for me. I hope I can find something in that catalog. Ill post anything good.

: Later Pat
