The A4 has a bigger trunk space than the E46.
C/D lists 14 cf, vs 11.
Back to the original poster's question.
While the quattro has definite advantages, a rwd with modern snow tires can do a pretty good job in many instances. Still, quattro with snowtires will always have the edge in adverse conditions.
Both are fine cars. I have the e46, my friend has the a4 1.8tqms. We drive each other's cars. We both agree that the e46 has sharper handling. We'll see how I fare this winter (northeast).
