I've never owned a 318 but I remember hearing that the battery was in front. They moved the battery to the trunk on the 6 cylinder cars to compensate for the added weight up front.

: I don't think the battery was moved to the trunk just for balance issues. Many of the "higher-end" auto makers have begun to do that. Supposedly, getting the battery away from the heat of the engine is good for the battery. I believe some Mercedes and Volvo models have it in the trunk.
