: : I've never owned a 318 but I remember hearing that the battery was in front. They moved the battery to the trunk on the 6 cylinder cars to compensate for the added weight up front.

: : Can any 318 owner confirm this?

:
: : : : Taking the spare tire out will save weight, but BMW designed the car to be balanced with the extra tire weight on the rear. Realize how they took the trouble of placing the battery in the trunk ?

: : : I don't think the battery was moved to the trunk just for balance issues. Many of the "higher-end" auto makers have begun to do that. Supposedly, getting the battery away from the heat of the engine is good for the battery. I believe some Mercedes and Volvo models have it in the trunk.
