Dash LED problem and cruise control problem (archive)

My 99 328i has a problem with the dashboard LED that indicates the current selected gear (auto trans). The rightmost colum of the LED dots intermittently appear/disappear, so instead of a "D" for drive, I sometimes see a "C", or a "F" instead of a "P" for park. Has anyone else had this problem and know if the fix will require replacing the whole instrument pod ? I want to avoid this since I know I will end up with rattles if this is required.

Also, someone please tell me if the following is a correctly operating cruise control: I can only set my cruise control speed by pressing the + - button on the steering wheel. The other button with the graphic that looks like a miniature speedometer has no effect when setting the speed, but does seem to work as a resume button. If this is the correct operation, the button graphics are not intuitive.

Thanks for any info you can provide.
