I test drove both 323i and 328i (both auto) for several hours each.
I ended up buying the 328i auto. the 323 just felt extremely weak.
as part of the test drive, I went up a very steep hill and the 323 was having a tough time maintaining 40mph. the 328 flew up at 50+ without any problems.
if you are getting an auto, then get the 328i (if you can afford the $3000 real difference)
