I read this in an auto magazine a year or two ago. The idea behind it is that if you drive the car immediatly after start up that the engine warms to operating temp more quickly with less fuel contamination of the oil etc. because the rings are sealing sooner. And obviously you are supposed to drive conservativly until it does reach operating temp.
