I had exactly the same problem for 6 months.
The biggest hassle was trying to reproduce
it for the technicians. That took 5 trips to the
dealer. Eventually, they replaced the switch
and the problem seems to have gone away (4 weeks
now and still no glitches).

What I did is to try it every day with one push
of the button. As soon as it did not work, I
called to make an appointment and didn't touch the
roof until the morning of the appointment. I
asked to have the manager and the technician who
would be working on it to come out and try the
switch themselves with careful instructions not
to push *up* which can sometimes reset the roof
as you described. Eventually, they were aboe to
demo and later demo long enough to admit that they
needed to replace something. Most of the time,
they would see it once and then it would go away
once they began working on it. They would do
nothing and write "unable to reproduce" on the
work order even though the had.

Best of luck with an extremely frustrating
problem! BMW should recognize a defective part in
all of the complaints by now I should think.

Brad
