I just experienced the same thing a month ago, and I chose NOT to replace it. This can happen again at any time, and now replacement will be as good as your new, 99% perfect window. My crack was probably the same size as yours (medium size fingernail star pattern), and I got **VERY** frustrated as well -had just upgraded my car for $3000 when it happened. There are shops that can make it almost as good as new, and I would try that out first. They use UV-light and some other stuff to blend the crack away. If you replace your entire window, make sure you get the same color-scheme and "pattern" on the window edges. Most shops will probably install a plain-normal window.
: I was driving on a freeway about 70 mph and all of sudden my e46's front window got smashed by a tiny rock, making a nickle sized crack on front window right in the center... very frustrating. I'm thinking if I should replace the window since it's fully covered by the insurance here in Massachusetts. But then, I'm wondering if replacing the front window might cause any rain leaking. After all, it won't be as reliable as origianl window installed at the factory when this car was built. If you guys have experience on replacing the front window and have some comments or advice, I'd appreciate.
