I started taking ground school classes for the PPL, but got so bored that I said screw it. The guy teaching it did have an ATPL license, and he flies Gulfstream V's part-time, but he didn't strike me as someone who knew why certain things are the way they are -- he just memorized all the stuff, I guess. e.g. why does an engine get really hot when you run it too lean? Intuitively, it would seem that too little fuel would make it colder, not hotter... (I think it's because the flame burns so slowly that most of the energy released by the combustion does not get converted into kinetic energy pushing against the piston -- it just turns into heat. Someone who really knows please correct me.)
Anyway, then I got too busy here at work, and the idea just fizzled away... still thinking I should do it, though, but it's the time that I can't afford, not the moolah for the lessons... :(
Obligatory BMW content: BMW has its roots as an aircraft engine manufacturer, and has owned the Rolls Royce aircraft engines division for many years now.
