: : Do discharge sources (i.e. Xenon) require the projector for light dispersal, or can they be manufactured similar to incandescent bulbs and placed in conventional reflector housings?

:
: You don't need the ellipsoid glass projector lens for HID. Acura, Lexus, MB are some of the marques that come to my mind that have HID without projector headlights.

: I guess you're also asking if they make 'retrofit' kits to install in place of normal bulbs? I don't think so - yet. I think some have tried sticking the HID 'bulb' in a normal reflector (hack job) but the light focusing might be off because the 'bulbs' are of different shapes. One other problem is some headlights (dual filament hi/low beam types) can't be retrofitted because there are no 'dual filament' (so to speak) HIDs. Maybe eventually, as mfrs are testing with methods to 'shift' the arc electromagnetically.
