Popular culture, and the car maker's marketing departments, have taught us that we're *SUPPOSED* to buy more car than we can afford.

The rule of thumb that I like is that the total value of *ALL* your vehicles (cars, boats, planes, jet-skies, etc.) should be no more than half your annual income. Even that seems high to me for folks with healthy incomes. We're at about 26% ourselves.
