My opinion is, Get the newer body style. My wife was trying to decide on a Passat or 323i, I knew that she really wanted the 323 but was more expensive. I told her why spend nearly $30K to drive a 2nd choice car, you will regret it sitting in a new Passat while stopped at a traffic light and a new 3-Series stops next to you. So we paid the extra $$$ for a 2000 323i and don't regret it one bit. Nobody can deny how much more nicer the new bodystyle looks compared to the older E36 and if you look through this message board, somesone mentions that his new 328i (E46) handles just as well or maybe a little better than his older M3(E36). Also I still haven't experienced any of the problems reported on this message board now with about 3000 miles on it. Hope this helps.
