This is another one of those "does it work for you?" scenarios. I'm not an audiophile, and I think the E46 base system is merely OK (and fine for me). But your BMW/ponycar analogy is spot on...big-bang, low-buck is exactly what some people want. Refinement isn't an issue, and it works for them. I just didn't want your post leaving the impression that upgrades can't be good.
BTW, what really matters to me is a steering wheel, three pedals, and a stick! ;-)

: There are definitely different levels of good. When a car company markets an Infinity, Harmon Kardon, Bose, etc. system it implies that it will deliver home audiophile quality sound. Granted, that is a very high standard. However, many high-end car buyers have these kind of systems in their homes and know what that level of sound quality is all about. The best factory systems don't deliver that level of performance. The best analogy I can come up with is trying to explain the merits of a BMW to a Camaro/Mustang guy after he says "But my Camaro is faster and still feels stable at 100mph". BMW drivers know that there's a lot more to it than that. The same goes for really good audio. There's a lot more to it than being really loud and not breaking up or distorting. I'm not saying that everyone appreciates that level of sound quality (just like not everyone can appreciate a BMW), and there's nothing wrong with you if you don't. It's just that the marketing of these systems implies WAY more than the systems deliver.
