I have a '99 Acura TL and it I can assure you that it does not shift from 1st to second automatically. You can redline it, but if you keep it redlined for longer than a half a second the fuel cutoff kicks in. It does however shift through the gears when coming to a stop if you happen to forget to do it yourself.
