As a rule, unlike what Pontiac says, wider is not better in rain. I have never had a car with low/wide performance tires that behaved better than my truck with high narrow tires - no matter how much the performance tires bragged about wet traction. The problem (and scary part) comes with hydroplaning. Same usually holds true for snow.
