Amazing coincidence! My Y2K 323i with 5-speed just experienced the same symptoms after 3000 trouble-free miles. In my situation, the DSC, EML and "check engine" lights came on along with the loss of power. After a few moments on the side of the road, the car would be driveable with only the check engine light on. A few miles later, the whole thing would repeat itself.
I immediately called my local service dealer and he told me to bring the car in eventhough it was 30 minutes to closing. I watched the tech go through the analysis with their computer. The computer was marginally usefull because of the intermittent nature of the problem. The tech checked the connectors at the throttle motor housing, cleaned the contacts and reconnected.
He then showed me a TSB (tech service bulletin) which talked about this problem on the E46, E39 and one additional model. Solution is to replace the throttle body which BMW refers to as an MDK. They will order the part on Monday and install on Tuesday.
Needless to say, I'm very disappointed with the apparent poor reliability of the E46. This was a problem identified in 2/99; my car was built in 6/99! However, I was impressed with the service tech staying after hours to help me and his willingness to explain the problem.
Bottom line: Be on the lookout for this problem...
