It ranks ALL CARS of ALL YEARS on the same scale. For example, to get a solid red circle, the car would have to have a failure rate of 2% or under for that trouble area. (The actual number is published in the magazine - I just guessed at it). It seems pretty obvious that a newer car would be more reliable than an older one. Therefore, you see deteriorating reliability as the cars get older in the ratings. Compare to other cars of the same year to get useful info, not to newer or older years of the same model. The magazine actually explains their rating system very well. Trouble is, not many people read it. They just look at the charts and reject the data as garbage.
