(1) BMW does not come standard with an alarm system and
: I was thinking of getting one AND/OR getting lojack.
: I wanted to know whether it is good to get both the
: lojack and the alarm or just lojack.
: Also, this is one place the dealer can make a tidy profit after one has done a tight negociation on the rest. Do you have advise on pricing?
I only got LoJack. My last car had an alarm, and the club. It was still stolen. (from Jersey City) I figure drive-away protection is enough. In case someone does flatbed it--at least it can be recovered quickly. It didn't show up until a week later. LoJack claims recovery within 24hrs. I considered an alarm to deter vandalism, but thought it would be a hassle. LoJack isn't something you can really negotiate price on. If you decide on an alarm, best to buy the BMW alarm mail order, and install it yourself. Then have the dealer set it. (I think around $30.)
: (3) I have been concerned about reliability given
: some of the posts. Though this might not be a statistically significant sample, it is alarming by the
: nature of the posts. Any comments?
I don't think it's anything to worry about. Especially considering that you will most likely be purchasing a MY'00, and minor 'bugs' should be ironed out. Reliability is good.
: (4) I have also seen posts about bent rims with the
: sports package. Unfortunately the dealers only had
: the premium package for test drives (all 3 dealers I
: went to) so I dont know how the sports package drives.
: So, I was debating sports vs premium and would
: appreciate comments/inputs.
I live in NJ as well, and have not yet damaged a wheel. (At least to my knowledge, visual inspection.) My car has over 12K on the odometer. If you are considering the sport package I would not consider this a reason not to get it. I also didn't test drive the sport package on the E46, but knew I wanted it.
