I like to take the literal definition of a "sports car" as a car that is used for sport. Most other definitions are just marketing or benchracing/posturing IMO.

I have seen some BMW sports cars. Lots of M3s Z3s are sports cars. Also some 318is 318tis 325is 328is and even M5s are sports cars. Haven't seen any e46 sports cars personally yet, but their owner's will get out there too.
