They're so unoriginal, the Toyota Production System (now referred to as Lean Production) that everyone from Daimler Chrysler to Daewoo has copied, wasn't really invented by them but was bought for a dime from an impoverished engineering student in Peoria. Sure, go ahead with your stereotypes.
Admittedly the Japanese manufacturers, are not trendsetters in automotive styling. They did most of their original thinking in devising efficient manufacturing systems that incidentally kicks the butt of each and every competitor out there.
