It consists of 17 digits:

1,2,3.Manufacturer
WBA- BMW AG

4,5,6.Model
AM3- 323i
AM5- 328i
BM3- 323Ci (I think)
BM5- 328Ci (Once Again, I am not sure)

7.Country
3- US Model

8.Restraint System
3- Dual, De-powered Airbags

9.Check Digit(1-9)- Varies from car to car

10.Model Year
X- '99 model
Y- '00 model

11.Assembly Plant
K- Munich
F- Dingolfing (Not sure on this one either)

12-17.Serial Number
1 letter, 5 numbers.
"K" for plant letter is usually proceeded by "C-----"
"F" for plant letter is usually proceeded by "P-----"
