: On this point I must agree 100%. The Japanese absolutely kick butt when it comes to production and testing of all things manufactured. They have few equals in these fields. However, in the production of original ideas, the wheels grind to a halt. Can you imagine what would happen if they were creative? Oh man, what a world we would have then.
: It is a cultural thing there. No one wants to be the exposed nail that gets hit by the hammer. However, those that do are usually rewarded and become quite rich.
: How far have we strayed from the original topic?
The wheels grind to a halt in the production of original ideas?
You mean devising a world-beating production system with just-in-time inventory mgt., quick-change machine presses, and flexible manufacturing (among other features) did not require a single original idea?
Let me give you a few names and tell me if you would not associate these with the production of original ideas: Sony, Nintendo, Honda.
Perhaps you might have meant in Japan, creativity is channelled to areas different from what Europeans and North Americans are accustomed to.
