Remember that Y2K cars have full maintenance for 3 /36. The $399 mentioned is to extend the maintenance to 4/50.
This is not the same as an extended warranty, i.e. to extend BMW's warranty that the car is free from defects. BMW's warranty covers 4 years (forgot miles, 50K?). So, your dealer may be telling the truth about the extended warranty. They just did not tell you about extending the full maintenance for that extra year and mileage.
I have a 99 and did not find it economical to extend the 3yr/36K scheduled maintenance to full maintenance for $700.
So, in a sense, all Y2K owners are getting a $700 bonus from BMWNA (i.e. BMWNA thinks it cost $700 to cover the extra parts and labor to do a full maintenance).
