::: It really must bug you to see a non-European society succeed.

Totally, wrong. I'm a Yank, and the last time I checked we're in the western hemisphere. Anyone here who thinks we are synonyous with Europe ought to return 'home' and see the difference first hand.

::: Even when you attempt to praise the Japanese, your praise is half-hearted. This "excellence in process quality" that you grudgingly grant them even as you minimize its significance has catapulted them into the 2nd largest economy in the world. Beating even your vaunted Germans. And designing world beating engines (as in Honda's F1 achievements) is not due merely to process quality.

I don't grudgingly grant it to them. They've earned every last bit, and Japan continues to be years ahead of Europe and the U.S. in implementing more advanced quality systems. Here, we still think ISO 9000 is advanced. I don't know what you mean by my 'vaunted Germans'. I'm not German, but any student of engineering has to acknowledge their numerous innovations and technological advances.

::: Then, you just had to find a white guy to credit for Japan's manufacturing success. As important as Deming and Juran's ideas are, you know the hardest part is applying them. All of Europe and North America sure couldn't until the Japanese showed them how.

I never thought of Deming as a 'white guy', but I guess we should discount his views now. You should know, however, that Japan's post WWII economy was transformed by a team of 'white guys' and other outsiders who brought the quality initiatives and manufacturing techniques which got Japan's economic miracle under way. They did indeed move well beyond what they were originally taught, and their own scientists and statisticians have made great advances. (They have not, however, forgotten the help they got from that 'white guy'). In fact, to this day, the highest quality honor one can be awarded by the JIS is the Deming Prize.

::: I have an E46 and have nothing against the Germans. But sorry, in a perfect world the Japanese are the Engineers,(though marketing should be left to Americans) because they can build it at least as well as the Germans and at less cost and greater reliability too.

I don't care who the engineers are, as long as the engineering and production process result in a product that meets my expectations.

::: I'm afraid Ausgang doesn't really like Auslanders and his mustache is getting narrower by the minute.

Ausgang is married to an Auslander, he has no mustache, and also doesn't think unveiled comparisons to Hitler should be casually applied to any person, German or otherwise. To do so, you diminish the evil that is truly due that figure. (Like if anyone wanted to, they could come up with a comment about Japanese Engineering that would justify such talk.)

P.S. You didn't even notice that the joke was more sarcastic of Germans than anyone.
