The only way I found them to work was as you say. Is there another way to have them come on automatically.

: There are a couple of ways. I just push the wiper control up one notch to intermittent, and it automatically controls the wiper speed. I drove from NY to Boston yesterday in the pouring rain, and the system worked great. I was kind of dubious as to the concept, but having used them, I like them.
