: I think this 330i auto @ 220hp would be lucky to match the current performance of the 328i stick, from what I've learned from this board about estimating 0-60 times. Which is one reason I predict the 330i will have 240 hp + , so as not to come anywhere near being perceived as a warmed over 328i.
Your reasoning may be a little off. The E46 328 is geared so that it will be noticably slower (in acceleration) than the E36 M3. It's a marketing ploy. In a world without marketing, the 330i would have a six speed transmission and a 0-60 in the high five second range. (say 5.8) However, BMW won't give the 330 a six speed because it will take away from the 'exclusivity' of the M3. If that is the case--don't expect accelleration times to increase by more than 0.5 secs. This will put the factory claim on 0-60 for E46 M3 @ 5.1 the 330i @ 6.1 and the 323(5) @ 7.1 for manual transmission models.
: Last week there were predictions on this board prices might remain relatively stable since Lexus is coming out with a model which will go head to head with 330i.
I think I remember Bruce saying the increase in price will be less than or around $2K.
: Re: 240 hp, BMW might reason if people want that they can buy a 540i. I don't care what they do -- I'm prepared to keep my 328i auto indefinitely!!
They won't reason that. A 330i based at around $36K won't have any affect on the $50K 540i. That's practically a 50% increase.
