I just last week installed the E46 alarm in my 328i and had the dealer program it today. The installation is very straightforward and the price is reasonable. I ordered the alarm from Pacific BMW for $219 and the dealer prgrammed the car for another $45.50. I don't know how it compares in performance to the Clifford system, but the car is generally hot-wire proof because of the coded ignition key anyway. With the E46 alarm, you also get the motion sensor and the tilt sensor. The other benefit to it is there is no warranty concern because it's a factory system. Hope this helps.
