Clutch troubles (feels like 'detent') (archive)

My 99 323 (18K miles) has been having some clutch troubles for the past few thousand miles. Basically, the clutch no longer feels smooth throughout the entire stroke (even when I'm not in gear). About 2/3 of the way down (and then, again, coming back up), it feels like the pedal is going through s 'detent' around the 2/3-point. There's sort of a 'click' - you can actually here it if the car's not moving. I just had it in for its first service anyway, so I asked them to take a look. They claim they replaced a bushing, but apparently they didn't drive it subsequently, because the problem's still there. The problem does not seem to cause any problems shifting, but it's still more than a little unnerving. I'm certainly not a professional driver or anything, but I drove my last two manual-transmission Acuras around 150K miles total with no problems, so I don't think I'm doing anything grossly wrong.

Anyone else have this problem? Any ideas how to fix it?

Thanks,
Jay K

PS: I went all the way down to Nick Alexander BMW (from Pasadena) based on some good reports I'd read about them on this board. Turned out to be a waste of time - next I plan on trying Century West.
