: I test drove the 323Ci with a 5 speed and a 328Ci with a 5 speed. I then bought the 328Ci. Both motors are silky smooth, and at full throttle with the tach headed for red line both are plenty fast for a street car. The difference is when you are at 2k RPM and suddenly you swerve around a slowing vehicle. The 2.8 just pulls hard, whereas the 323Ci would rather have a down shift. Same comment when pulling out of a stop sign. The 2.8 has enough torque that you could let out the clutch without ever touching the gas. The perception of power is more than numbers. If you like the feel of a powerful car, the 328Ci is the only choice. If you are more interested in the look of the car, the 323Ci is provides all the quality and comfort of BMW for a few thousand less. I intended to buy the 323Ci, but once I drove the 328Ci, it was sold before we even finished the test drive. Good luck and best wishes.
