My car is an E36 328i, but I believe that my experience should apply to the E46 as well. I have driven lots insnow and ice, both with RWD and FWD, but not enough to mention with AWD. I have found traction control very effective at keeping the car controllable; basically, it makes it hard to screw-up when you are underway. I would much rather drive my 328i under those conditions than any of the FWD cars I know. On the other hand, traction control is no help at getting you out of deep snow.
