I don't hvea my E46 yet so can't help you with break in... but everything you asked more or less you can find if you search archives on this board.

As far as the bra issue, or course it will protect you vs. chips and damage to your grill.... but I would hate to cover up that incredible looking grill. As for the discoloration that I have heard many people say, I had a bra on my red car for 4 almost 5 years and had no discoloration at all. When you wash and wax your car just take the bra off. If your paint is well protected (waxed) you will have no discoloration.
