Hello, Bimwads. Here's my book report on the new 323i sedan.
My most-excellent new toy is a 323i with the sport-premium package,
heated front seats and the split/folding rear seats. It has Orient Blue
paint, sand leatherette interior, and factory alarm.
I picked up the new car last Thursday and have about 650 miles on it
so far (bought the car in Iowa and spent the weekend in Indiana.)
Bottom line: The car is a jewel. Wonderful. An elegant design in most
all respects. Note that there is no objective reporting here. I'm biased.
This is the best car I've ever owned, and compares well with many
pricier cars I've driven.
The body is vault-solid. The sport suspension is taut and supple - it
consists of firmer shocks and springs, thicker anti-sway bars and is
lowered a bit. The steering is precise with good feel. (Mine came with
ContiSportContacts in 225/50 ZR 16.) At eighty plus (KM of course), the
interior is low-conversation quiet with minimal wind noise.
I'm still in break-in, but the 2.5 liter engine feels torquey and crisp
to run up through the gears. It does sound a bit muted, but not so much
that I could mistake the sound for a Lexus. I've driven a friend's 328i
and can attest to the clever effectiveness of the Dynamic Stability
Control - ABS for cornering. It should help in rain and winter driving
and can be switched off to play.
Chicago-area note: I bought the car from Kimberley Imports in Davenport,
Iowa. Phone 319-391-8300. The sales manager there is Jeff Vinar. Jeff
was willing to negotiate price and seems eager to build an Internet sales
presence for buyers seeking a better deal than the hot Chicago market is
willing to offer. The buying process was very pleasant there!
Over the weekend my girlfriend and I took the new Bimmer to Indiana
and gave her sister and brother-in-law her older Honda Accord. In turn,
I gave my girlfriend my good-condition VW Jetta GLX VR6, so three
people got new cars out of the deal. Everybody's grinning.
Happy Thanksgiving to all,
'00 323i sport
new CCA member, too.
