From my research (looking at older BMWs, talking to people who have owned both, etc.), the leatherette is better for the long-term wear. The leather takes more care and tends to take a beating in the sunny states. However, some people say that it does not breath as well as leather (more tendency to sweat, etc. on the leatherette). I went with the leatherette for the low maintenance and the longevity, as well as avoiding an additional option cost with the leather.
: Leather or Leatherette? Is it worth it? Letherette feels pretty good.
